Garlington History and Construction

Garlington History and Construction

The History of a Legend

Richard Garlington founded Garlington Yachts in the early 1980s after deciding he didn't like the boats available at the time. Garlington's vision was to create a practical, streamlined, and first-class sportfishing boat that could catch fish and handle rough seas. He enlisted the help of his friend Dan McCarthy, a famous U.S. Navy submarine designer from the 1960s and 1970s, to design a soft-riding hull with a running surface that could handle heavy seas while remaining comfortable and easy to maneuver.

44 Garlington Construction

Garlington Yachts are built with cored composition hulls containing fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon fiber. Yacht construction done this way provides substantial weight savings and rigidity. Cored hulls are made by sandwiching a low-density material between two thin layers of high-modulus, fiber-reinforced-plastic (FRP) skins.

Cored Hulls have many Advantages:

  • Weight: Cored hulls are lighter than solid hulls
  • Strength and stiffness: Cored hulls are stronger and stiffer than solid hulls for the same weight
  • Impact resistance: Cored hulls can better absorb shock and are less likely to fracture than solid hulls
  • Thermal and sound insulation: Cored hulls provide better thermal and sound insulation than solid hulls
  • Condensation: Cored hulls reduce condensation problems inside the boat
  • Sweating: Cored hulls don't sweat like non-cored hulls
  • Faster hulls with less horsepower

Vessel Walkthrough

Entering the cabin area the U-Shaped galley is to starboard. The sink is all the way to starboard with the 36" stainless steel faced refrigerator against the aft bulkhead. To port is the head with vanity and stand-up shower. Forward of the head on the portside is a large plush leather couch with custom rod storage behind the back rest. The cabinets above the couch store the stereo system. On the starboard side, forward of the galley area is the dinette, comfortable for 4 people and converts to a sleeping area. There is a Bravio TV mounted on the wall, visible from galley and salon area. The interior was new in 2010. Its neutral colors create a very warm and comfortable atmosphere.
